There are many pros and cons of a gluten free diet, and many things you should know that are important also. If you are either choosing this diet plan, or have been instructed by your doctor, you may be wondering if there are side effects, or how your body is going to react to the changes. Lets look at some of the benefits of a gluten free diet.

First things first, I must stress that any change in diet can have an effect on your body, many of those changes may not be visible at first, and may take a few weeks to show up. There are many health benefits from going Gluten-free, but there are certain side effects such as weight gain, depression, fatigue and menstrual change in women.

Many people do not have a choice, this type of dietary plan is the only way because they have become intolerant to it. If you are choosing this type of diet to lose weight, or have to eat this way because of an intolerance, then lets look at some of the pros and cons of gluten-free diet.

Firstly lets look at some of the pros of a gluten-free diet.

If you are trying to lose weight, going Gluten-free can help. Eating less foods which contain the substance, may mean you are eating less carbohydrates, and when combined with other diet programs, can be beneficial and speed up weight loss.

Many people when the are first diagnosed may go on a diet of fresh foods such as adding more fruit and vegetables into their diets. The benefits of this are obvious, the increase in nutrients may make your body thrive, and in the short-term you will see increased energy levels and overall increase in health levels.

If you suffer from other medical conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Parkinson's Disease or Osteoporosis, then choosing a non gluten diet is a great way of losing weight, and getting healthier quicker. There is research to show that eating this type of dietary plan, helps people have less recovery time when used along with their treatments.

The cons of a gluten-free diet.

Along with the benefits, there are also some cons we must mention. Following a gluten-free diet in the long-term for some could lead to a deficiency in nutrients. I mentioned above about how eating more fresh foods and fruits could be beneficial, but this type of eating plan is not for everyone. Eating a diet like this could mean you are missing out on many nutrients your body needs to function, and for some this can lead to lethargy and low energy levels, depression in some cases and also headaches.
